NEW EXHIBIT REFLECTS ON THE OMNIPRESENCE OF MUSIC IN CHAGALL’S WORK

Encore une expo à ne pas rater à Nice. Another not-to-be-missed exhibit in Nice.

A new exhibition in Nice aims to show the importance of music to Chagall and how he incorporated it into his works.

Last Autumn, two exhibitions held at the Musée de la musique – Philarmonie de Paris (The Triumph of Music) and at La Piscine – Musée D’art et d’Industrie André Diligent in Roubaix (Sources of Music), highlighted the role music played in Chagall’s work.

These two exhibits have been combined together to offer visitors to the Musée National Marc Chagall in Nice a wonderful reflection on the Russian artist’s love for the 5th art with over 200 artworks (paintings, drawings, etchings, ceramics, stained glass, and the like) borrowed from major public and private collections from both France and abroad.

Music has always been a constant source of inspiration to Chagall, from the traditional Jewish songs of his childhood to the classical music of Bach and Mozart. His paintings are full of musicians: violinists, cymbalists, acrobatic musicians, and flautists, all mingling perfectly with the religious figures so clearly loved by the artist.

For Chagall, music was a vehicle for human sentiments: sorrow, joy, consolation, exaltation. This is why, throughout his long career, he worked on many projects for the theatre, ballet and opera. For instance, he created costumes and set designs for the Jewish Art Theatre in Moscow, painted the ceiling of the Opéra de Paris and the frescoes at the Lincoln Center in New York.

A testimony of this love for music is already on display in the museum in Nice, with not only the concert hall which hosts a rich programme of musical events throughout the year, but also the harpsichord he painted in 1980.

The exhibition Marc Chagall et la Musique runs until 13th June, 2016. It is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm (6 pm from the 2nd of May), and is closed Tuesdays and on the 1st of May. Admission costs €10, but is free for all on the first Sunday of each month.
